The TEF Canada speaking test (Expression Orale) is often the most feared component — but it is also one of the most coachable. With the right preparation, CLB 9 is consistently achievable.
Format of the TEF Canada Speaking Test
The speaking test has three parts: a monologue on a given topic, a dialogue with the examiner, and an interactive exercise. Total duration is approximately 15 minutes.
What Examiners Are Looking For
Examiners score on four criteria: lexical range, grammatical accuracy, fluency and coherence, and pronunciation. The biggest gains come from fluency — candidates who speak naturally, even with minor errors, consistently outscore those who speak slowly and over-cautiously.
Preparation Strategy
Record yourself speaking on random topics for 3 minutes daily. Listen back and identify hesitation patterns. Work with a tutor on filler phrases and transitions. Practise Part 2 (dialogue) with role-play scenarios covering common topics: work, health, environment, and technology.
